By February 28, 2023No Comments

Poker is a popular card game that is enjoyed by countless people all over the world. Playing poker can be intimidating, given it comes with some complex rules and strategies. However, once you learn the basics of it, you will be a step closer to becoming a poker ace. In this blog, we have covered everything you must learn to play poker and some tips to help you win.

How to Play Poker

Poker can be played in various ways, but before we learn about the types of it, we must indulge in the basics of the game. The main purpose of this game is to use the cards that you have dealt to create the best possible five-card hand. But, even if you don’t, you need to convince the player that you do. That’s the gist of it.

Rankings of Poker Cards

The ranking of cards in a deck are-

A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.

Now, you must create the best hand from the cards you have dealt. By that, we mean you need to create one of these:

  • Straight Flush
  • Four of a Kind
  • Full House
  • Flush
  • Straight
  • Three of a Kind
  • Two Pair
  • Pair

These are mentioned in the order of strongest to weakest. By the general rule, the higher the value your cards hold in your hand, the better and stronger it is. So, for example, if you have two Aces, it will be stronger than two queens. Another example is if you have a straight hand of 8,9,10, J, Q. It will beat 7,8,9,10, J and so on.

Basic Rules of Poker

You must have the strongest five-card hand to win in poker. But even if you don’t, you must convince the other players that you do.

When it is your turn, or in other terms, the ‘action’ is on you, you can either make a bet, call or raise the bets. If you want to do neither, you can choose to fold by sliding away your cards while facing them down, and then you will not be able to take any part in that hand.

If more than one player remains in the final betting round, there will be a showdown. All the remaining players will have to reveal their cards in the showdown. The player with the strongest hand will win the game.

If, before the showdown, all the players except one fold their cards while betting or raising the stakes, that person will automatically win that hand. This is when “bluffing” will make or break the game. You must be clever enough to convince the player you have a strong hand; if they believe you, they will fold, and that’s how you win, even if you have a weak hand.

Know the Terms

One of the most important parts of learning how to play poker is understanding the terms used in the game. Knowing these terms and their meanings will help you make informed decisions at the table and give you a better understanding of what’s happening during a hand. Here are some of the common terms you’ll need to know:

  • Ante – This is each player’s initial stake to the pot before a hand begins.
  • Bluff – When a player raises or bets with a weak hand, hoping that other players will fold and he can win the pot without showing his cards.
  • Bet – A wager made by a player to increase the pot size.
  • Call – When a player matches the amount of money put forward by another player.
  • Check – A decision to not bet, even though it is allowed.
  • Fold – When a player decides to quit the hand by not betting, forfeiting any chance at winning the pot.
  • Flop – The three community cards that are dealt face up after the first round of betting.
  • Hand – The combination of two hole cards and five community cards.
  • Pot – The sum of money in the middle of the table for which all players compete.
  • Showdown – When all players reveal their hands to determine who wins the pot.
  • Turn – The fourth community card is dealt, after which another betting round occurs.
  • River – The fifth and final community card is dealt with, after which the last betting round occurs.
